Police Brutality, 2017
Installation view, Tokyo, Japan
The series builds a photographic discourse that is one of the core elements of Fujiwara’s approach, which consists in constructing apparent imagery using a distribution of source-less, associated images. By cropping images of police uniforms and combining them with sports events and friendly attempts to help, Fujiwara dissects and analyzes our perception of police brutality, using neutral images like an empty platform for building consensus and critique (once they are distributed and shared via social networks). The removal of facts inherent to photography’s documentary approach is thereby reversed through its distribution channels.
